Insect Eggs on Maple Tree - Arilus cristatus

Size: approx. size of usa dime
Found today on my Maple tree - the outer dark colored edge surrounding the egg pattern is sticky and the consistency of honey.
Can you identify the insect that laid these eggs?

Hello Ron,

Thank-you for your help, it looks like Wheel Bug is spot on. I've seen them around the yard before, very primitive looking.

I hope they all hatch and help with the Japanese beetle problems here.
