beetle - Lysathia ludoviciana

beetle - Lysathia ludoviciana
Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
December 29, 2011
There were dozens and dozens of these small green beetles, 3-4mm, floating, struggling or crawling amid plant debris and leaves along the edge of the pond here; some alive, some not. Flea beetle?

Moved tentatively; feeling pretty good about it, though

ID confirmed by J.C. Ciegler:
"I've been comparing Lysathia ludoviciana (Fall) and Scelolyperus lithophilus Wilcox. They are very similar. But I think it's Lysathia, because the punctures of the elytra are larger than those on the pronotum, and the pronotum is just a little bit wider. Also the whole beetle is a bit wider. So that's my best guess."

thanks!
very nice, thanks much! Am out of town for the weekend, so I don't know if the beetles are still there in as many numbers, but it's very nice to have an ID for them!

Donaciinae?
I might check out Donaciinae if I were you. I'm sure someone will be able to pin the id down further.
