Northern Black Widow - Latrodectus variolus - female

Northern Black Widow - Latrodectus variolus - Female
Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana, USA
June 25, 2006
Size: 1"
Found behind an electric meter. Markings on abdomen look to denote a Northern Black Widow, Latrodectus variolus

Probably.
Probably is a northern widow, but the southern black widow can also have extensive red markings above. This is largely a matter of the age of the spider. Older individuals tend to be immaculate, or nearly so, on the dorsum of the abdomen (in L. mactans). Female northern widows do have the red marks more consistently.
