Little brown beetle -
Dienerella pilifera
Massachusetts, USA
Size: 1.3 mm
I was cleaning out my various bug-raising bags and vials yesterday, and I found this little dead beetle stuck to the outside of one of the bags.

Unfortunately the specimen was damaged in shipping, but Wolfgang Rücker says it seems to be
Dienerella pilifera
(Reitter, 1875), which would be a new record for the continent (see guide page).

Wolfgang Rücker says that this could be ...
...
Dienerella beloni
(Reitter 1882) (he has specimens from China, Africa, Carbo Verde, Madagascar, USA: Baltimore) or, rather unlikely,
D. laticeps
(Reitter 1884). Are the elytra pubescent? these species are hard to tell apart from photos. For a reliable ID, please send voucher specimens.

Dienerella ruficollis
...according to the key by Majka et al 2009, based on having 3 antennal segments in the club, little to no basal pronotal impression, and pronotal base narrower than elytra.

definitely not!
sorry, actually doesn't look anything like ruficollis. No match with any of the other dorsal habitus figures in the article...

Hmm...
Well, I've still got the specimen, if there's someone I should send it to. Maybe Christopher Majka can take a look at these images before I do though. Too bad I don't have better information about its origins.
