Leaf mine on Violet leaves - Nefusa ambigua

Leaf mine on Violet leaves - Nefusa ambigua
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
September 11, 2011
I couldn't really get any more detail out of the large leaf mine since the crop was already at 100%. However, this mine, which is the smaller one to the right on the top leaf, might show more detail including a larva. I'll post another set of mines found on another violet leaf separately.

Good job
I will start looking at violet leaves now.

These mines
were first discovered in my hometown (Amherst, MA, per the reference I cited on the guide page), so I'm determined to find them too. They have never properly been described or illustrated, but that paper refers to the length of the mine at different larval stages, indicating a more or less linear mine like these.

The only area where I have found these leaf mines was in the local municipal park next to Black Earth Creek. There are a lot of these violets growing in our yard, too, but I haven't noticed any there, but I'm going to watch for them next summer.
