Color
Structurually it looks good for H. alcis. The color seems to be off. Moose flies should be darker than this. Was it bleached by storage in alcohol?

Moose Fly
Hi John,

Yes, 4 years in alcohol and possibly recently emerged too (that would be when a malaise trap would be most likely to collect one). The characters are good and it turns out we have pictures of moose from the same site with moose fly: see end of post on Winter tick here http://homebuggarden.blogspot.com/
