how long I worked on this before just giving up.

 
i can imagine
absolutely nothing to be ashamed about, though. the tenebs are one of those group where the only way to learn is through a comprehensive reference collection + a set of good keys. no way around. everything about them will feel extremely confusing, frustrating, counterintuitive in the process -- before you realize how fascinating and sweet they actually are
