Lebia tricolor

Lebia tricolor
Medford, (~25 miles east of Philadelphia, PA) Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
June 8, 2011
Size: 7.7mm
believe this one to be Lebia tricolor, vs. L. viridipennis, based on larger size, and coloration differences. But if someone can provided better characteristics to separate these two somewhat similar species, we should probably update their respective info pages. D&A's key would seem to only work on males at best.

If L. tricolor, a first for my backyard (unless previously overlooked as L. viridpennis)

came to UV light

Lebia's
I don't have my references available to delve into key characters, but what strikes me as a very distinctive difference between the images of the two species is the much more distinctive, noticeably impressed elytral striae of the images of L. tricolor as compared to those of L. viridipennis, which seem very fine and lightly impressed. It also seems that L. viridipennis has dark knees, while the L. tricolor have all pale legs. I don't know whether the leg coloration is variable, but the difference in elytral striae should be reliable.

Looking at Madge's revision of Lebia
I see a couple more characters. (1)

Subgenus Loxopeza (including L. tricolor) has an upper protibial spur, whereas it is absent in most other Lebia.

L. tricolor has antennae and palpi pale. Images of L. viridipennis on BG have partly darkened antennae and dark palpi.

thanks Brad,
that's all better than counting on a male's protarsal claw
