Carapace, dorsal view - Pirata montanus - female

Carapace, dorsal view - Pirata montanus - Female
Albany, Carroll County, New Hampshire, USA
Features characteristic of the genus: shiny carapace, nearly always possessing a V-shaped mark; femur I with 1 prolateral macroseta (Dondale & Redner, 1990).

Kaston (1948) nicely describes the proportions of face, eyes, and head as coming closer in appearance to Pardosa than any of the other species. He also mentions a characteristic (present here, at least) that Dondale & Redner seem to overlook: the carapace is largely dark, but "has a thin marginal strip of white hairs".
