Super Water Beetle? - Acilius fraternus

Super Water Beetle? - Acilius fraternus
Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
November 4, 2007
Size: 1"
I found this guy in a puddle of water in front of my home!

Moved
I'm pretty sure this is A. fraternus based on locality and features seen here on the underside- black ventral surface and hind femora.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Based on the structure of the male palette (enlarged area of foretarsus with adhesive discs). There are a couple species known from Texas. A dorsal photo would be helpful.

Dytiscid male
This looks to me like a male Predaceous Diving Beetle in the family Dytiscidae. Your specimen has the elarged tarsal pads that are present on many males of this family--as in this image:

Keep in mind that this might not be the same species (or, possibly, even genus, tribe, or subfamily) as your specimen.

See here for more information about the Dytiscidae.

Dytiscidae
Not sure if it can be ID'd without seeing the top of the beetle.
