Came to black light/MV trap. Maybe a Cucullia of some kind? (live oak/chaparral habitat).

Yes perhaps so!
and possibly Cucullia antipoda (1) - Hodges#10206; but I am not certain of this. A lateral view of the wings might help viewing the wing patterns.
