Planthopper on Milkweed Pod, Acanaloniid - Acanalonia bivittata

Planthopper on Milkweed Pod, Acanaloniid - Acanalonia bivittata
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
August 9, 2003
This hopper species undoubtedly evolved to look like an emerging leaf on an herbaceous plant. This individual was hunkered down on the pod of Common Milkweed. The spines of the pod give an idea of scale.

Acanaloniid hopper, genus Acanalonia, no? Similar to others pictured on this site, but with dark red trim and eyes with curved white lines in them.
