Nitidulidae, elytra hair tufts - Amphicrossus ciliatus

Nitidulidae, elytra hair tufts - Amphicrossus ciliatus
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 26, 2011
Size: 4.5 mm
Can anyone tell me what it means if the little bunch of hairs are not present on the elytra?
Are they associated with male or female and if so are they diagnostically reliable?
Thank you.
