spiny galls on scrub oak leaf - Feron sulfureum

spiny galls on scrub oak leaf - Feron sulfureum
Massai Point, Chiricahua National Monument, ~6800' elevation, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
April 29, 2011
Size: cluster 3 cm, galls 8 mm
A colleague found this cluster of spiny galls on the underside of a scrub oak leaf, which I suspect to be Netleaf Oak (Quercus rugosa in "white oak group" of genus) [confirmation pending]. Cluster of approximately 30 galls, each 8 mm tall with ~1 mm-wide opening at peak. UPDATE on scrub oak species ID: "probably" Quercus rugosa (in white oak group), "possibly" Q. hypoleucoides (in red oak group).

Weld doesn't record any galls for Quercus rugosa, but this species is recorded from Q. arizonica and Q. oblongifolia, both in the white oak group.

These would be a job for (1), which I don't have. I'm not sure if Joyce has it. It's possible that these are in Felt (1940), and it's also very possible that no one knows what these are. The cynipid galls of the Southwest are poorly known. These sure are distinctive though.
