Size: 5/8"
This is the adult that hatched. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbgZp481HbY

It hovers and moves very quickly with a buzzing sound. It can land upside down and lays its eggs on the ceiling of the chicken coop.

Ornidia obesa…
Features in the video suggest this fly which is associated with liquid waste and poultry farms. The distribution includes Hawaii. These are not considered beneficials.

See reference here.

Thank you
Appreciate the ID. They crawl off similar to Black Soldier flies so I've been feeding them to the chickens. They love them, since they're not beneficial I'll keep giving them to the chickens to keep the population down.

FYI…
You may already be aware of this, but if nuisance flies become a bigger problem at your facility, you can order wasp parasitoids that can help suppress their populations. These chalcid wasps attack the pupal stage of the fly and are the true "beneficials" that you mentioned.

See reference here.

Great Idea
This is a great idea, not sure they can be implemented in Hawaii. Really strict laws about bringing in any type of insect.

I'm guessing they might also attack the Black Soldier Fly Larvae. I'm in the process of starting a colony from the wild. I actually had my first two crawl out last night. If they do attack the BSFL I wouldn't be able to use them since it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks for the suggestions.
