Winter moth - Phigalia strigataria - male

Winter moth - Phigalia strigataria - Male
Washington County, Rhode Island, USA
February 1, 2012
This moth appeared after a remarkable warm spell. The colors are much more green in life, the green scales were very apparent, almost iridescent. I am not too familiar with winter moths, and it is unusual for me to see any Lepidoptera this deep into winter in RI.

Moved from Phigalia.

Moved from Ennominae.

Moved from ID Request.

This is the first moth on BG in RI in February - ever. BTW it's been unseasonably warm down here, too.

Small Phigalia
Probably Phigalia strigataria. The green cast is a feature which helps to separate it from the similar Toothed Phigalia.

Thanks
Looks like these show up in February down south, this occurance certainly shows what kind of winter we've been having up here.
