DamselflyA - Enallagma signatum

DamselflyA - Enallagma signatum
Adams County, Pennsylvania, USA
May 22, 2006
Can not seem to ID this Damselfly. Thanks for any help.

Moved
Moved from American Bluets.

This is interesting!
We're gonna suggest a blue-form female of the Orange Bluet - Enallagma signatum. Sounds strange, but only the Orange and the Vesper have those abdominal color patterns, and only the Orange is reported to be sometimes blue. We actually have an image in the guide at for comparison. See what you think.

Orange Bluet
Hi John/Jane, I am using Ed Lam's "Damselflies of the Northeast" which I have found to be very helpful to me here in PA. Looking at the E. signatum in Ed's guide, aside from the color variation, I can see where there is similarity. Although he doesn't show a brown dorsal stripe, they both have wide ones. The eyespots are narrow and connected by a occipital bar and the black dorsal markings on the abdomen appear to be right from what I can see. I am going to go with your suggestion unless someone else comes up with a better one. Thanks for your response.

Some references...
...you might find useful, because they give checklists by state and county, and also images. I'm still a beginner at this, and know nothing about the east coast Odonates.

And the checklist for the county you list:

Excellent image by the way!
