they look more like ticks than spiders..

 
they're kinda supposed to
the harvestmen have never been considered close relatives of spiders [well, not during the last ~150 yrs, at least], but, until fairly recently, were thought to be closely related to mites.
now it seems there is a consensus about their much closer relationship to scorpions & C°.
those sluggish armored jobs may be rather common in hardwood leaf litter in s. Europe; one or two made their way to New England.
i find them exceedingly cute.

a friend that is into Opiliones said these are European harvestmen.
