I know L. hesperus occurs in the southwest but I'm not sure if mactans also occurs in New Mexico. I want to confirm this is hesperus.

Yes, that is a juvenile Western Black Widow Spider. A beautiful young spider.

Subadult male
I have a note (from unknown source) that says L. hesperus is the only Latrodectus species whose adult male is not black. But this specimen is subadult, IMO.

I was thinking it could be subadult based on color, but it is HUGE!!! Look at the photo on my finger! I've never seen such a large male!
