Lasiopogon hinei
This is a male Lasiopogon hinei, also once known as L. sibiricus, which is the name Lehr gave the Eurasian populations. It was first described in North America, though, where it lives from Alaska and Yukon south through northeastern British Columbia to central Alberta. It inhabits dunes, remnant grasslands and streamsides. L. hinei is one of very few asilids that live in both North America and Asia.
In Alaska and Yukon it is often found with three other Lasiopogon species -- L. canus, L. prima and L. yukonensis. Lasiopogon hinei and L. prima have dark halter knobs (barely seen here) but the latter has a white or mostly white mystax (facial bristles) while L. hinei has a dark mystax.
