ID
I don't think this is Ochlodes sylvanoides, it is much too dark, especially the forewing. It looks much more like Poanes melane to me.

Moved to Woodland Skipper page
since that seems to be a reasonable ID given the previous comments. Can always be moved again if a better determination can be made.

Ochlodes species
Could be a Woodland Skipper (common throughout California), and looks similar to
Kildale's photo
of that species, but the angle of view and the shadow on the left forewing make it hard to positively rule out a female Rural Skipper (
Ocholodes agricola
). Rural Skippers are common in California but have never been recorded in Canada (where Kildale's photo was taken).

Skipper
Welcome Leslie. That image that is been shown is mine (Dereila). Thought it looked familiar. This is a great site, this is Kildale.

Thanks Derrick. It makes sense that we would have the same one. I think ours have to be woodland skippers.

Woodland Skipper?
It looks similar to this as-yet unidentified skipper:
I guessed that one to be a Woodland Skipper (see the link on my comment for that page). But I haven't had a confirmation, and I don't have a western butterflies guide.
Any other suggestions?
