small mottled weevil - Onychylis longulus

small mottled weevil - Onychylis longulus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
July 2, 2006
Size: about 4 mm
Came to UV lights.

Much Thanks, Belov and Phillip and Charles!
I'll rename it in my files.

Moved
Moved from Bagous.

Onychylis longulus LeConte, 1876
Charles O'Brien det.

Curculionidae: Bagous sp.
Can't be sure without looking at it closely, but sure looks like a Bagous. A number of aquatic/semiaquatic species to go with the other aquatics that you are pulling in.

Thank you, Don.
I never thought about weevils having anything to do with water :-)

A few
genera have adults that swim quite happily through the water, such as Bagous, and the larvae feed on aquatic plants. The rice water weevil from the western states is the best known weevil (not a Bagous).
