Tiger Beetle - Cicindela scutellaris - Cicindela scutellaris
Holly Ridge Conservation Area, Stoddard County, Missouri, USA
March 21, 2011
Size: ~.75 inch (~19mm) long
I was out birding Holly Ridge CA looking for early migrants in the 3rd week in March. Holly Ridge CA is part of the geographic formation known as Crowley Ridge that extends from Arkansas into the southeast region of Missouri. The area is primarily sand. I knew this was a Tiger Beetle but wasn't sure which species. I sent the image to Ted Macrae for the identification since he's studied these in the area for many years now. It's a bit early of a sighting, but coincidentally the previous year, I observed on a day earlier (second image).

Nice beetle! I'll have to check this site out. C. scutellaris look similar in southern Arkansas but there they are C. scutellaris rugata x C. scutellaris lecontei.

We're not clear on what you are saying about
the dates. Are these two images taken a year apart? If so can you put the correct dates on the images by clicking on Edit for the one that is wrong, and then please Unlink the images. Link implies to us here that these are two images of the same individual.
Also please note whether Ted identified both specimens.

Tiger Beetle
I sent this image to Ted and told him I was leaning toward Cicindela scutellaris as an I.D. He did not reply that it was different; however, he's a busy man and may not have had time to reply it was different.
