Pilophorus Hahn 1826
43 species in North America(1)
2-4 mm
small dark-colored bugs, usually slightly constricted in middle of body, and wider at both ends; middle region often brightly colored orange or red with white markings
"Sericeous scalelike setae on dorsum arranged in patches on scutellum and usually as transverse bands on the hemelytra, those on thoracic pleuron aggregated in an elongate patch on the posterior margin of mesepimeron and a tiny patch on the posterior margin of the metepisternum, and usually with a patch anterolaterally on abdominal venter"(1)
throughout the US and so. Canada; Eurasia
on many broad-leaved and coniferous trees; often host-specific, according to plant host specificity of the prey

most (all?) species are at least in part predaceous, esp. on aphids and other homopterans; plant host specificity may be influenced by the host specificity of the prey(1)
