Astylopsis? - Astylopsis collaris

Astylopsis? - Astylopsis collaris
Framingham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 21, 2011
Attracted to mercury vapor lamp (but was running away from my flashlight). I think this is genus Astylopsis, can anyone confirm?

Doug Yanega says: "Astylopsis collaris, from what I can see -
"...doesn't appear to have black tufts of hair on eleytra (=sexguttata), nor strong white markings (=macula)."

[nice beetle, Jennifer --and a great shot, too; thanks! =v=]
Moved from Astylopsis.

Mass. distribution
Interesting that all the bugguide records for this species are from Mass. I have another photo of an Astylopsis from back in 2007 here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/urtica/2301452160/

Photographer bias
We have a lot of prolific contributors from MA, which often skews the distribution on the data maps (which are incomplete for almost all species anyway).

Yup
Interpreting data from BugGuide can be very dangerous. Images on BugGuide are pics of random insects from random photagraphers who happened to be at a particular spot when a particular insect happened to be present. Locality and temporal data on BG is completely random and reflects in no way an organism's abundance in a particular area.

You know, Middlesex Co, MA does seem to be a hot bed of nature photographers...and you are all VERY good :).

Must be something in that Middlesex water....

careful Brad...
you're gonna set me up for another bad joke :)

I just said it was interesting...
I didn't say I was gonna write a thesis on it :-)
