Aphids on oat grass - Metopolophium dirhodum - female

Aphids on oat grass - Metopolophium dirhodum - Female
Costa Mesa, Orange County, California, USA
February 18, 2012
Size: 1 or 3mm long
Seven pale green wingless aphids on a stalk of oat grass {Avena sativa}. One aphid is much larger than the others (~3mm long), and my guess is that she's a parthenogenetically reproducing female with her six offspring (each ~1mm long). The oat grass is approximately 1 week old; I just planted it myself. This is a crop of the original image, focusing on the aphids themselves; the scale bar is 1mm long.
