American Carrion Beetle -- What is it eating/drinking? - Necrophila americana

American Carrion Beetle -- What is it eating/drinking? - Necrophila americana
Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA
September 24, 2011
I uploaded this photo as it shows Necrophila americana apparently drinking or eating something from a plant. It appears to have a tongue similar to a Reddish-brown Stag Beetle? I wasn't quite expecting this, given they supposedly eat maggots. In this particular location I find these regularly but they are always clinging to plants in this same way and not on carrion; some piece of natural history of the species of which I'm not aware. Insights welcomed!
