This pupa was dead on a Orange tree leaf in citrus orchard in backyard.

yes, R. cardinalis, and maybe not dead
The bright red color, the arrangement of tubercles and setae on the larval exuvium, and the fact that you have adult R. cardinalis on the same tree all point to that species. It might not be dead, though - pupae are immobile and it's in their best interest to *look* dead and unappetizing!

Please keep an eye out for the bright red larvae of this species, we don't have any images of the larvae on BG and I'd love to see them!

I checked the next morning and it was gone so you were right! I'll definitely look for the larva :)
