Identified: - Necrodes surinamensis
Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada
July 4, 2006
Size: Unknown
Found in the showerhouse and cabins at a residential summer camp.

Looking at the photograph the following jump out at me:
-orange dots on the back of the elytra
-reticulated elytra
-no lamellate antennae
-seems to be a mite on the back R elytra, just behind where the tibia is hidden by the abdomen

Silphid
I used to know what species this is, but I diverged from beetles a long time ago and now I can't remember. I do know it's in the family Silphidae, if my beetle taxonomy is still correct.

Silphid sounds right...
From my copy of How to know the insects: "These beetles are moderately large, usually black with orange, red or yellow markings, and have clubbed antennae."

Seems to fit the bill for family - so Carrion Beetle. Any suggestions for the genus or species?

In the meantime, I'll poke around the site to see if I can figure it out myself.

Necrodes surinamensis.
This is a male specimen of Necrodes surinamensis. Males have the swollen hind femora ("thighs") and bowed hind tibia ("shins"). Neat find:-)

Thanks!
Thanks!

Seems like too fine of an image to Frass
We'll move it to the guide page and get Ontario on the map.
