Dogwood Spittlebugs (mating) - Clastoptera proteus - male - female

Dogwood Spittlebugs (mating) - Clastoptera proteus - Male Female
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
July 5, 2006
Size: ~3 mm
Not the best shot in the world, but it illustrates the dimorphism between sexes. I assume the smaller one is the male? If so, we can probably sex the other images in the guide based on markings...

Clastoptera proteus
The sexes do differ in size, but not in color. The markings are quite variable in both sexes, which is why it is called "proteus" (protean ="changeable").

Good info
Thanks Andy!
