70612 Dichopetala gladiator - Obolopteryx catinata - Female
Santa Ana NWR, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
April 23, 1992
I was checking this one and saw no species on BG. I don't remember how it was determined. Is it a non-valid name or misidentity?

Dichopetala catinata
While D. gladiator may occur in Hidalgo County, I doubt that identification for this species for two reasons. First, the ovipositor is not long and dorsoventrally narrow enough for D. gladiator. Second, the dark dorsolateral stripes are more typical of D. catinata, which I've personally collected in Cameron County next door. There also is an image in the guide of a male D. catinata from the Santa Ana NWR.

FYI, Dichopetala gladiator Rehn & Hebard, 1914 is a valid name; the species isn't currently represented on BugGuide.

Moved from Short-wing Katydids.
