is that an eye at the top? - Erinnyis alope
Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida, USA
November 3, 2010
one night i happened to notice on each of my 5 papaya trees, at the base of the trunks, each one had one of these caterpillar-like worms, all hanging upside down, and all in exactly the same position as the others. they were each approximately four inches long, and i was so astonished by their less than beautiful appearance that i had to photograph one close up,using a macro filter to capture the details.

Reminds me of Erinnyis...

...a kind of hornworm, or sphinx moth caterpillar, but not the "tomato hornworm."

Wait to see if the lep experts agree, though.

Definitely Erinnyis
I generally have trouble distinguishing the dark forms of E. alope and E. ello.

edit: After consulting Tuttle (2007) I will go with E. alope based on anal horn and host plant.
