Lacinipolia stricta

Lacinipolia stricta
In Westwood by outdoor night light; elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
July 27, 2010
Size: Forewing length 12mm
ID provided by BOLD Systems; DNA sequence for this specimen is a "solid" match with over 25 specimens of species Lacinipolia stricta, ranging from 99.83% to 96.48%.

I was a bit hesitant to place this moth with all the other light brown specimens of Lacinipolia stricta. The next nearest DNA neighbor was just one specimen at BOLD, Lacinipolia circumcincta at a 98.32% DNA match, and whose darker color seems more close to this moth. The overall wing patterns of the two species, however, seem to be about the same.

The BOLD statement for this specimen is as follows: "This identification is solid unless there is a very closely allied congeneric species that has not yet been analyzed. Such cases are rare." Considering the DNA comparison data provided thus far for these two species, a rare change may yet occur as more Lacinipolia circumcincta specimens are added to the BOLD Systems data base.
