This is a sphingid, tribe Smerinthini. However, from this angle it is difficult for me to make a positive species ID. Probably Smerinthus jamaicensis or Paonias excaecata

Thank you! I should have sent a different shot showing a "stinger-like' appendage which I found after I sent this. I would guess the caterpillar was 1 1/2 inches long but since this was last summer, I wouldn't bet much.

Based on the other photo
I would say it looks more like Paonias excaecata because of the green anal horn, however, the horn is still fairly difficult to see and I am not 100% certain. I will leave it in the tribe unless someone else feels more positive about an ID.
