Some kind of moth caterpillar? - Xylophanes tersa

Some kind of moth caterpillar? - Xylophanes tersa
Coconut Creek, Broward County, Florida, USA
March 1, 2012
Size: About 2 inches
Found on red Penta flowers. It has a retractable head that is not visible in the picture. The head is pointy, smaller/skinnier than the rest of the body and comes out in front of the largest false eye spot. Appears to be active at night and for the most part stays frozen in one spot during the day. It's been here for a few days and seems to be an only child.

Thanks! Does anyone know its cocoon habits? Will it hang from something, burrow in the ground, stay on the Pentas, flee the nest, etc?
