Xyelid sawfly showing crazy palpi! - Xyela - female

Xyelid sawfly showing crazy palpi! - Xyela - Female
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
March 1, 2012
Size: 4.5 mm
Collected by Kara Tyler-Julian on a glue board at night, attracted by a daylight compact fluorescent lightbulb. Photographed through a microscope by Ozan Demirözer.

Look at the palpi! From the Wikipedia article on Xyelidae:

"The family is characterized by the appendages of the head, which are remarkable in that the antennae and palpi are nearly leg-like in structure, with a long basal segment followed by a series of tiny segments, as in the tibia-tarsus. It is tempting to speculate that there is a homeobox-gene explanation for this unusual anatomy, as mutations of this gene region in other insects can cause the mouthparts and antennae to become leg-like."

Xyelidae
Xyela sp., female. Associated with pines. Difficult to give a species identification from photos. Palpi of all species are similar, but can't comment on the statement in Wikipedia.
