Cerastis of some kind? - Cerastis cornuta - Male
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
March 2, 2012
Size: 27mm wingspan.
Came to black light/MV trap. (live oak/chaparral trap). I can't decide whether this is Cerastis cornuta or Cerastis enigmatica.

Moved from Cutworm or Dart Moths.

100% match at BOLD to 7 Cerastis cornuta, 99.83% to 1 C. cornuta, 98.67% to 12 C. enigmatica, 98.60% to 1 C. enigmatica.

According to Lafontaine, J. D., 1998. Moths of America North of Mexico, Fascicle 27.3: p. 43: Cerastis cornuta & Cerastis enigmatica are indistinguishable externally. C. cornuta has 12-14mm forewing & occurs from Sonoma County southward to Santa Clara County, while C. enigmatica has 14-16mm forewing & occurs from the Panhandle of Alaska southward to Humboldt County in northern California.

This specimen has 27mm wing span, and 11.5mm forewing; and it was collected just south of Santa Clara county, but way south of Humboldt county, so I'm guessing it is C. cornuta.
