P. carbonarius is South American. A pogo as dark as this, from North America, has to be P. rugosus. Rugules on the head look right, too.

Any value in the second image (unmoved) or frass?

Awesome - thanks James! I knew something was funny when I suggested the gestalt det from Antweb. I can definitely see it now that you have recommended the sanest determination.

Pogonomyrmex
Pogonomyrmex carbonarius? I would like James Trager or another myrmecologist to verify this det. I don't know the Pogos of Texas, but the head-profile gestalt suggests P. carbonarius.
Check out that psammophore bit!
