0307.96 - Dryadaula n. sp.
This moth is extremely similar in appearance to 0307 - Dryadaula visaliella and to a couple of unnamed species. Don Davis at the USNM is working on a MONA fascicle covering tineids, and he tells me that he will be describing ~ 8 new species in this genus (out of 70+ new species in the family). He thinks that this is probably his n. sp. #39 which ranges from Florida to east Texas. His specimen of D. visaliella taken nearest to you is from northern Alabama. Terry Harrison has examined other specimens similar to D. visaliella from Illinois and West Virginia that represent a different new species, Davis's n. sp. #30. The only way to determine precisely the species in your photo is to send the specimen to Davis for dissection, or to the BOLD project for analysis of DNA. The locality dots seen on the map at MPG for 0307 probably represent at least three species.
