Ants - 3 castes - Camponotus subbarbatus - male - female

Ants - 3 castes - Camponotus subbarbatus - Male Female
Oak Ridge, Guilford County, North Carolina, USA
March 15, 2012
Size: about 4 to 7 mm
These were found under the bark of a rotten oak log.
I've included various individuals representing
major workers, minor workers, and winged males.
I brought them into my studio to photograph them and
released them back to their home.

In this picture the three individuals are huddling together for
protection.

Mea culpa - This should have been left in C*subbarbatus. Note bristles on genae (cheeks).

Beautiful set of pictures
Nice to see the castes together.

Thanks for the comments, James.
I looked at some of your interesting images, and I really like your
descriptions, especially the behavioral observations.
I would like to see more of this on BG. Seems that the emphasis is usually on ID and compiling geographic data.
