Cherry Webspinning Sawfly - Neurotoma edwardi

Cherry Webspinning Sawfly - Neurotoma edwardi
Essex, Ontario, Canada
July 7, 2006
Size: 20 mm long
Regurgitating red fluid. Studies by Nguyen, Perry, Versprill and Yang at West Carolina Univ. showed fluid had little to no effect on predator ants or stinkbugs. These caterpillars are almost mature and will drop to the ground, pupate and over-winter in the soil. Adults emerge in mid-June. Description of adult is all black, square head, white lateral marks on abdomen at sides only - center is black. I will try to keep a few during the winter.

I made a page for these.
Nice to have some sawflies identified down to species! I'm sure someone will let us know if there's any objection to your ID.

Thanks Hannah
I might be able to ID a few more. Lots of Dogwood Sawflies. Every stage (instar) is different. I'm a couple of weeks behind. Been on vacation - took lots of pictures!
