Zale species
Maybe Zale helata, but this looks a lot like specimens of Zale buchholzi: very plain chocolate brown with not a lot of mottling. I'm not sure of buchholzi's full range, but I've collected them in the coastal plain in New Jersey and North Carolina, and they definitely occur in Florida as well, so I don't see why they wouldn't be found along the Gulf coast to Alabama. They're mostly associated with coastal pine barrens habitats. (Although my NC specimens came from a loblolly pine forest that would certainly not qualify as a barrens.) Not saying that this is definitely buchholzi, but I would consider it a possibility.

I was thinking Z obliqua, based on this image ... assuming that ID is correct. I've seen several the past few nights and will capture/inspect it. Robert

Size
Also, from what I've seen Z. buchholzi seems to be a bit larger than Z. helata.
