Size: Larva (?) 3mm?
Sorry, sun was too bright... Leaf mine found on Sheep Sorrel (
Rumex acetosella
).

Unidentified Leaf Mines

I found some of these mines today. They do start out linear, but since the leaves are so small the mines get jumbled together and before long look like blotches.

Mantura?
The only insects I know of in North America that mine in
Rumex acetosella
leaves are
Mantura
spp. Their mines are normally
linear
, but I haven't seen examples of them in
R. acetosella
specifically. The only other
Rumex
miners I know of are
Pegomya
larvae, which wouldn't have the black head capsule that this larva seems to have. I guess this is the same thing that you found today?
I will have to look for some sheep sorrel and see if I can find any of these.
