Leaf Miner on Sheep Sorrel - Mantura chrysanthemi

Leaf Miner on Sheep Sorrel - Mantura chrysanthemi
Atco, Camden County, New Jersey, USA
March 17, 2012
Size: Larva (?) 3mm?
Sorry, sun was too bright... Leaf mine found on Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella).

I found some of these mines today. They do start out linear, but since the leaves are so small the mines get jumbled together and before long look like blotches.

Mantura?
The only insects I know of in North America that mine in Rumex acetosella leaves are Mantura spp. Their mines are normally linear, but I haven't seen examples of them in R. acetosella specifically. The only other Rumex miners I know of are Pegomya larvae, which wouldn't have the black head capsule that this larva seems to have. I guess this is the same thing that you found today?

I will have to look for some sheep sorrel and see if I can find any of these.
