Since Mike didn't tell us how
he decided between Strategus and Dynastes: here is an older comment originally from Brett Ratcliff: Dynastes have 2 setae on each claw while Strategus have 3 or 4. So If you still have it, Joe, it should be big enough to see the setae without a magnifying glass!

Yes I still have it. I'll be bringing it in to entomologists John and Kendra Abbott at UT Austin, as they want to keep it for outreach education. I'll ask them for their take. Thank you!

looks like Odontotaenius disjunctus larve
these are found under dead wood barck sometimes under brecks most commen in alabama

In addition to size, legs are wrong.
Passalids have the metathoracic legs reduced to a nub, then there is a comb they rub it up against to stridulate, this larva has a full set of legs.

That size - Dynastes tityus
is the only thing that comes to mind - did you ever see adults around in late summer?
Scarab larvae are all rather oversized, probably to accommodate all those symbionts in their guts. So Strategus is another option
