Turned over a piece of wood and found this guy nestled in a crack. Didn't have my hand lens with me so didn't know what we were looking at until we got him on the computer screen...and still don't know!

Neriene clathrata?
Just a guess based on the zig zags. Compare with

It looks like a juvenile male... so maybe hasn't had that last big change yet.

Amazing, it does look just like Tom's photo!
How did you find that? Thought we had looked everywhere. I'm gonna have to find this guy again and get some better pics. It's definitely listed for Illinois and the rest of the Great Lakes:
Neriene clathrata (Sundevall 1830
Neriene radiata (Walckenaer 1842)
Neriene variabilis (Banks 1892)

I was browsing my references
trying to figure this one out

I feel like I should know it... and it's driving me nuts. =]

not sure
about how big was it? The first thing that came to mind was Dictynidae, but that doesn't seem to be it.

Unfortunately too small for me to see well without glasses!
I was definitely unprepared for the start of my photography year! I would guess at most 4mm and was not expecting the pattern I saw when we downloaded the camera. I could tell there was a spider there, but couldn't see it well in the darkness. I happy to frass it. Just thought someone might recognize the zigzag color pattern. I'll do better next time :)

the pattern does look familiar
I browsed through some stuff this morning, but didn't find a match. We can let it hang around & maybe we'll figure it out eventually.
