Bark beetle - Ips avulsus

Bark beetle - Ips avulsus
Athens/ Sandy Creek Park, Clarke County, Georgia, USA
January 29, 2012
The park has had dozens of dead and ailing pine trees removed in the past few months, and I've made a habit of peeling the bark before they're removed from the property. I've found a huge variety of insects, including at least four different types of bark beetle. This is the smallest (5mm or less) and also the species I encounter most often. One of the things I'm trying to figure out is whether any of these critters are directly responsible for sickening the trees, as opposed to moving in after the trees are already in a weakened state. looks like an Ips to me; that subtribe anyway
the best way to figure it out is using(1)
a good profile shot should help, too

Pretty sure I'll be seeing these guys again.
I'll try for that profile shot and an exact measurement while I'm at it.
