Apple Sphinx (Sphinx gordius) - Sphinx poecila

Apple Sphinx (Sphinx gordius) - Sphinx poecila
Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Town of Baileys Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
June 14, 2006
Adult Sphinx gordius, Hodges #7810, came to night light. This was exciting, because I've been watching for this species for several years. Positive ID was made by examining the specimen. THIS IS A DOOR COUNTY RECORD!

Sphinx poecila
The hidwing fringe is all-white, and the subterminal area is the same color as the rest of the forewing. Both of these characters point to S. poecila, rather than S. gordius.

Agreed
I tend to agree with you, and I had leaned toward poecila when I originally moved it. One of the problems I routinely ran into however, was that before Janice passed, any question of her moth IDs was met with strong defensiveness and the assurance that an unnamed expert had examined each and every single specimen. But with you and I in agreement on the ID, I say it could definitely be moved at this point.
