bee-like fly with orange thorax - Pterallastes thoracicus - female

bee-like fly with orange thorax - Pterallastes thoracicus - Female
Springfield, Virginia, USA
August 25, 2004
Sitting on a yellow flower, this fly was fuzzy like a bee and had a bright orange thorax. Probably can't tell from the photo, but the hairs on the thorax were somewhat shiny, giving the fly a golden look in the right light. Any help in identifying is appreciated.

Narcissus bulb fly?
Looks to me like Merodon equestris, the Narcissus bulb fly (family Syrphidae), but there are several genera that have this general body plan. Merodon can be extremely variable in color, though. This is one of very few syrphids that can be regarded as an occasional pest, the larvae developing in daffodil bulbs.

Pterallastes thoracicus
No this is not a Merodon.
I know M. equestris very well, this is something very different.
I am quite sure this is a female specimen of Pterallastes thoracicus!
