These flies were hanging out by an old knot in a maple tree that was oozing spunk water. ID help appreciated.

Should be Orbellia barbata (Garrett), male.

I did not collect it, but maybe I'll see one again. Curiously, I photographed a similar fly on the same date (January 1) last year. Is it also a species of Orbellia?
