Syrphid Fly? - Rhingia nasica - Female
Springfield, Virginia, USA
August 25, 2004
Found just sitting on a leaf. The abdomen looks like it could have some distinctive markings, though it is hard to see. Most notably is the strange protrusion in the fly's face. Any help identifying is appreciated.

This is Rhingia nasica, the only Nearctic species of the genus. There are at least two European species and the common one R. campestris is often attracted to bluish and purplish flowers. Its larvae have been reported from dung.
